Brazilian Religious demography: an analysis based on Censuses microdata

The objective of this research project is to assess the demographic evolution of the Jewish and Evangelical population of Brazil from 1970 to 2010 in various areas, including education, income, labor market, marriage, fertility, and family types. The study will compare the dynamics of the Jewish and Evangelical population with those of the general Brazilian population. In the case of family formation and dissolution, we intend to show the family dynamics over the decades, including whether there is an increase in positive assortative mating between individuals of the same religion and what effects these homogamous marriages may have on the number of children and women's labor force participation. We intend to estimate the impacts of education and religion on monetary (couples’ income) and nonmonetary gains from marriage. We consider two variables as non-monetary gains (household public goods): home ownership and the number of children as in Wong (2016). Both decisions are related to expectations about long-term relationships.
