The Research and Innovation Office was established in 2016 with the goal of promoting high-impact, innovative, and high-quality research, contributing to Fundação Getulio Vargas’s (FGV) mission of fostering Brazil’s socioeconomic development. To achieve this goal, the office engages with research activities in both the public and private sectors, encourages the formation of research networks in Brazil and abroad, and disseminates the knowledge produced by FGV’s schools and research centers.
Since its creation, the Research and Innovation Office has contributed to:
- Engaging 182 leading FGV researchers in collaborative, funded research projects;
- Stimulating the creation of research networks among scholars in Brazil and other countries, exposing them to the circulation of new ideas and knowledge production, thereby fostering an environment conducive to innovative research;
- Expanding training and development opportunities for young researchers from FGV programs and other Brazilian or international research institutions;
- Enhancing the quality of applied research projects through the involvement of researchers from various Brazilian and international universities;
- Increasing the scientific output of FGV researchers.
The initiatives of the Research Development Office have also led FGV to become the only Brazilian research institution with a cooperation agreement with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). In 2018, FGV was one of the Brazilian research and teaching institutions selected to participate in CAPES-Print, CAPES’s internationalization program, through a project involving collaboration among seven FGV schools. Additionally, FGV is part of several international partnerships that promote scientific research, such as the Newton Fund, which also includes Fiocruz and the British Council.

In addition to the Research and Applied Knowledge Directorate, the governance structures overseeing FGV’s research activities include the Research and Innovation Committee, the Research Ethics Committee Involving Human Subjects (CEPH), and the Center for Quality in Applied Research (CQPA).
