Debate Among Funding Agencies, Itamaraty, IMPA, and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences Opens the VII FGV Research Symposium

The first day of the event concluded with the announcement of Fundação Getulio Vargas’ 2023 research highlights

On September 12, Fundação Getulio Vargas hosted presidents of Brazil’s research funding foundations, along with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty), the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), at its Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro. The occasion marked the opening of the VII FGV Research Symposium with a panel discussion on the theme: “The Impact of Science on Society and the Advancement of Knowledge: New Challenges in Research, Technology, and Innovation.”

Participants in the roundtable included FGV President Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal; ABC Director Álvaro Prata; Director of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Carlos Américo Pacheco; President of the Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation (FAPERJ), Jerson Lima; Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Intellectual Property at Itamaraty, Minister Luciano Mazza de Andrade; Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana; President of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), Mercedes Bustamante; President of the National Council of State Research Funding Foundations (CONFAP), Odir Dellagostin; Planning Superintendent at the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (FINEP), Márcio Girao; and President of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Ricardo Galvão.

The session was moderated by Professor Lívio Amaral, a member of FGV’s Research and Innovation Committee. The discussion brought diverse perspectives on the state of graduate education in Brazil and the main challenges in improving teaching and research in the country. At the end of the roundtable, the speakers answered questions from an audience of approximately 300 people, eager to engage with institutions and funding agencies on research and innovation.

In the afternoon, the panel “Research, Innovation, and the Business Sector” took place, featuring Públio Vieira, Coordinator of Innovation Environments and Startups at the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI); Flávio Grynszpan, Director of the iCorps Brazil Institute; José Fernando Perez, CEO of Recepta Biopharma; Carlos Simonsen, Managing Partner at Upload Ventures; and Eduardo Emrich, President of Biominas Brasil. This panel was moderated by Professor Edson Watanabe from the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and a member of FGV’s Research and Innovation Committee.

Following the conclusion of the second panel, FGV’s 2023 Research Highlights were announced. These were selected by the institution’s Research and Innovation Committee. On the occasion, a video series was launched showcasing the main findings of each highlighted study and the methodologies used in their development.
