Institutional Review Board

Established in 2016, FGV’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) is one of the first ethics committees in Brazil focused on the field of Social Sciences. With the goal of ensuring the highest ethical standards in research development, these committees adopt the most rigorous guidelines established by national and international scientific communities. As a result, FGV is well positioned to meet the requirements of both national and international institutions for publishing academic articles and developing collaborative research projects.

The IRB is a collegial body with consultative, deliberative, and educational functions, responsible for safeguarding the integrity and dignity of research participants. The creation of a research ethics committee is highly relevant for any research institution, as leading scientific journals exclude any research that has not undergone ethical review by the originating institution. Moreover, the most prestigious international research funding agencies require ethical review by the institution’s committee to assess potential impacts on human research participants.

In this context, the IRB issues opinions and makes recommendations on the ethical aspects of research submitted for review, ensuring that experimental procedures comply with national and international standards for the treatment of human subjects in research. The IRB is composed of both internal and external members.
